Melissa C. Marsted is the founder of Lucky Penny Publications, which publishes children’s books, as well as nonfiction, memoirs, and autobiographies. She grew up in Connecticut as a competitive skier, runner, and swimmer and then turned her attention to marathons and ultra-marathons. Melissa was inspired to write and read by her 2nd grade teacher at Cherry Brook Elementary School. Her passion for long distance running in Utah’s national parks inspired a children’s book series on the national parks. She is a member of the Independent Book Publishers Association and the Utah Publishers Group. A graduate of Harvard University, with a B.A. in classical Greek and an M.A. from Antioch University, Melissa serves on several boards including Utah Humanities, Summit County Library, and the Harvard Alumni Association of Utah. Melissa has five children’s books in print and is currently writing her running memoir, Finding Feathers. Melissa lives in Park City, Utah and has two sons, a Jack Russell terrier, and two cats.
Melissa feels that she has found her purpose with Lucky Penny Publications, LLC, which is the publishing company for both Lucky Penny Press and Silver Dollar Press. For her 30-year graduation anniversary she wrote a reflection on her life purpose and the purpose of Lucky Penny: “To apply my courage, creativity, intuition and sense of adventure to write and publish outdoor adventure articles and national park books for children, and to advocate for the National Park System, public lands, and the humanities while also encouraging individuals, young and old, to explore nature and live a sustainable, healthy lifestyle.”
As part of LPP’s cultural fabric, each book is connected to a non-profit organization, which receives a portion of the proceeds.
