My name is Willie Holdman and I am a native Utahn, currently living at the base of the majestic Mount Timpanogos in Heber, Utah. I was fortunate to experience the wonders of nature photography starting at an early age by assisting my father, Floyd, on photography assignments for National Geographic throughout the country. I went to Brigham Young University and received a BFA with an emphasis in photography. While I was studying at BYU I would find time to slip out and photograph the rural areas of Utah. Although I have been able to photograph nature all over the world nothing can compare with the versatility and beauty of the high alpine meadows or the National Parks’ vibrant red rock desert scenes in my home state of Utah. Photographers are visual artists. Like a drawing or painting, nature photography in itself is not a science; it is a medium of visual expression. The camera is now, more than ever, a tool for the artist to express himself. The question for visual artists is how clearly we can express our personal vision. My wish is that I am able to express myself, and my vision, through the use of a camera. It is my desire to do portraits of the Earth, to capture her personality and true character. In order to experience this phenomenon of nature we must be attentive to the subject. Just as people only reveal themselves, on special occasions, to people they know and trust, so too, does the Earth save herself for those who respect her and are willing to make the sacrifice to journey off the beaten path and wait patiently for the rare moments when she reveals herself. Those moments don’t last long and one must be ready and skillful in order to capture those moments. I invite you to join me on some of my adventures by viewing some of my favorite pieces of work here on Made in Park City.
